These are all the crazy things people do at office holiday parties

These are all the crazy things people do at office holiday partiesThese are all the crazy things people do at office holiday partiesIts that time of year again and I dont mean a time of gratitude and reflection.I mean its the office holiday party season. Though office holiday celebrations may have started off quaint and modest (think Fezziwigs office party in A Christmas Carol though old Fezziwigg definitely had a few) over the years they have developed into absolute debauchery as we have binnenseen in film and television depictions such as The Office, Mad Men, Arrested Development and of course the film Office Christmas Party. But unlike characters in these movies and shows, you arent fictional and actually have to go to work with your colleagues and boss the next day.But you arent alone if you have maybe had a few too many drinks at the office holiday party, said something inappropriate, danced a little too freely, made out in the coat closet with a coworker or even ended up in jail FourLoko surveyed 2,000 workers to see how people really behave at the party and also to see how they feel about this annual event. Some of the statistics may surprise you or maybe not.Click to enlarge

How to Backtrack a Promise to a Client - The Muse

How to Backtrack a Promise to a Client - The MuseHow to Backtrack a Promise to a ClientYour client expects something that was included in their contract and you have to explain why you cant deliver on it. Or, your team is behind on developing a new feature that was promised and you have to break the news that it wont be ready on time. Or, your former co-worker promised an insane renewal absprache that is just off-the-walls.Tricky stuff, for koranvers. But dont stress Its normal to have to readjust a clients timeline or expectations, and if you do it right, it can actually make your relationship that much stronger. Heres the best way to handle backtracking on a promise.1. Figure Out What Went WrongThe first thing you need to do is figure out how this promise came to be. Go back through old schmelzglass or talk to anyone who worked with the client before you to see if (and if so, when) that expectation was set and who it was set by.If theres a contract involved, think about whether you should loop in your legal team. And finally, see if you took any notes (or someone did) on the clients original goals. Why did they start working with you in the first place?2. Research ReplacementsCome to the conversation prepared. What other benefits can you offer them instead? A discount? Access to other parts of your platform? See if your product team has ideas for quick things you could come up with.3. Set Up a CallThe next step is to set up a call with your client. I know, emails so much easier to send, but also much harder to interpret. Someones far less likely to yell on the phone than they are to send a rude message, especially when they hear your voice and remember youre a human on the other end of this exchange. You can initiate the conversation with this email templateHi Clients Name,Hope all is well with youWeve recently made some changes to our product offering/I have some updates to your contract/I understand youre concerned about receiving X specific feature, and I wa nt to address this as soon as possible to make sure were on the same page. Would you have time this week to chat on the phone? Please let me know what times work best for you.Best,Your Name4. Get on the PhoneThe key to this conversation is to be empathetic and patient. Let them explain their side of the story and show that youre invested in their concerns by really listening and using the following phrasesI understand youI recognizeI see your pointIf the mistake was your fault, apologize (genuinely). If it was promised from someone else on your team, apologize as well, but dont throw them under the bus. At the end of the day, your clients working with your company, not just you. When you put the blame on another colleague, it sends a signal that your organizations untrustworthy. Instead, assure them that youre all working together to make things right. Finally, dont pretend the promise didnt exist in the first place or put the blame on the client. Even if it was a simple miscommunicat ion, acknowledge that and take responsibility- dont spend your time pointing fingers.5. Offer Your Alternative SolutionTime to put all that pre-work to use and show that youve actively worked to resolve the issue.Of course, sometimes theres just nothing tangible you can give them in that moment. If thats the case, go back to their goals and figure out how you can help them reach them in other ways. For exampleI understand your goal is their goal. We cant guarantee this, as thats unfortunately not what our product is used for. However, were happy to work with you to leverage your current product/have you speak with someone else on our team/discuss other options you might be interested in or weve done with other partners.Make it Clear Youre the Clients PartnerThroughout this entire discussion, its important to be your clients advocate both internally and externally. Show them youre making the effort to find a solution, and youll assure them you not only take their goals seriously, but that youre willing to go the extra mile to satisfy your clients. 6. Set Clear Guidelines for Next TimeOnce youve diffused the bomb, make sure this doesnt happen again- for everyones sake. The best way to do this is to document everything. After speaking, send a follow-up email outlining what you discussed and have them clarify anything theyre confused or unsure about. Keep a running folder of emails and documents you have with them to reference in future conversations. This not only makes addressing the issue in the moment easier, it also keeps your client honest. If they swear they were promised something, you can go back to your notes and see if thats actually true. After that, spend time with your team to figure out what happened and how to prevent it going forward. Maybe you need a refresher on what you do and dont provide clients, or maybe your team needs to re-evaluate how you present your product. Regardless of what you decide on, its important to take away some lesson from th is.

Writing a Cover Letter to Control Your Message

Writing a Cover Letter to Control Your MessageWriting a Cover Letter to Control Your MessageStop calling it a cover letter. Youre missing the point. Youre notlage covering youre opening. Its an introduction letter, a quick summation of what you bring to the table, and an invitation to read mora details of your senior-level background and experience. And just like your resume, it needs to be focused on accomplishments and results.Tell them what you are going to tell themYour core message needs to be in your introduction letter, said professional resume writer Andrew Pearl, who works with Ladders. Like a good opening of a speech, you tell your audience what you are going to tell them. You boil down what a reader will see in the resume in a quick, organized way.The whole point is to get the readers attention by touching on key results that youll expand on in your resume. Both the intro letter and the resume need to be emphasizing what you can do for an employer, Pearl said. And the best w ay to accomplish this is by reinforcing the main accomplishments as bullets in your intro letter, using an economy of language and respecting your reader.Pearl uses four to six bullets in the intro letter with only a few paragraphs surrounding them this formatting makes it easy for a reader to scan the page for key terms and language.Bullets are hooks, Pearl said. Use them to sustain a reader, but balance them with easy-to-follow, short paragraphs.Pearl recently rewrote the resume and cover letter of sales vice president Patricia K., who agreed the finished version caught her eye.I welches really impressed with the intro letter Andrew wrote for me, said Patricia, who chose not to use her full name for this article. It blew me away how strong this letter welches as a way of leading in to my resume. The words he chose to use and the items he chose to use from my resume really stood out to me.Patricia has risen through the ranks quickly for a senior-level salesperson. She had risen to the VP level in the past three years, and had been with the same financial company for the past eight years. Her new resume, while impressive for its accomplishments, is a one-page document. But it grabs the reader and doesnt skirt around the issue of age.Show some respectExperience is progressive, Pearl said. It makes age secondary. If you focus on the tangible results and you are succinct about it, then you are showing the hiring manager or human-resources person who reads hundreds of resumes in a few days some respect.I had been with the same company for the last eight years, said Patricia, who splits living in both Birmingham, Ala., and New Orleans. So I hadnt needed a new resume. But my old one had a format that was essentially copied from a book I found when I had finished college. That format was the old objective-and-statement-of-qualifications format, which includes a whole lot of bullet points. Her old resume was littered with bullets that were not really focused on accomplis hments, Pearl said. They werent explaining the outcome of the results, and there were too many of them. The eye couldnt breathe.Pearl said he encourages his resume clients to control the experience of reading your resume. There is so much that is out of your control in a job search, Pearl said. But you can control that intro letter and resume by being smart and focused on the decision makers reading your resume. Every bullet point matters, so use them wisely. Not all things are equal. Some people place in their resume that they have competency in Microsoft Word right after a bullet on some major accomplishment. On some level, it can be read that these bullets right next to each other are of equal value. The new resume for Patricia is already paying dividends. She has gotten word of two openings via friends and former co-workers to whom she gave her new resume. The results? I was told my resume was at the top of the list which makes me feel very confident, Patricia said. My friend said h is boss was really impressed. With that knowledge, Patricia expects to have the interviews begin soon.

The Job Search Advice You Need to Hear Again and Again

The Job Search Advice You Need to Hear Again and AgainJob Search AdviceThe Job Search Advice You Need to Hear Again and AgainOne of our newest career-related distitelies is What Would Dad Say?, a blog written by dad and business authority G.L. Hoffman. He had a fantastic post last week, The Class Everyone Thought You Took, But You Didnt. The class in question was Interviewing 101. Frankly, its nothing that we havent all heard (or said) before, but its so basic, so important, and so simply stated that it really ought to be embroidered on a throw pillow.Im a believer in simplicity. Wasnt it Thoreau who said, Simplify, simplify, simplify? Thats probably why I loved the post. It lays the foundation for job seeker success by condensing the essential elements into 10 simple statements.Heres the first, direct from the duh truckWhen you send out a resume, send a cover letter too.Make both perfect.Come on, theres just no arguing with thatUnfortunately, that doesnt stop people from arguing. Sur e, some big companies will just strip the cover letter out of your electronic application and scan the resume into a database. Some hiring managers will overlook typos in your resume. But why risk it? Just write the letter and fix your mistakes. Its not hardHeres the second painfully obvious pointKeep track of what company and to whom you send your resume and cover letter. You do this so when you are called by the companys recruiter, you dont say things like how did you get my resume, or who are you and why are you calling me?Trust me, this scenario really is painful. I have actually said to a phone interviewer, Forgive me, but can you refresh my memory about which company this is, and which position you have open? Yeah. Still couldnt tell you what that company was, because strangely they passed up the opportunity to hire me.Keep a record of all the resumes and letters you send out. Organize it so that when an interviewer calls (which is the whole point), youll be able to determine instantly which version of your resume theyre looking at, what you said in your letter, and which of your qualifications are most relevant to this position. Again, its not hard. You get the picture. I urge you to check out the other eight basic statements in the post to remind yourself how simple job seeking really ought to be.You dont have to get fancy to advance your career. You just need to understand and master the basics. Do that and youll be miles ahead of most of the competition.Do you agree? Is getting hired really a simple process? Or is it a complicated jumble of variables in which success depends on dumb luck and a precise planetary alignment?

The #1 threat to your job

The 1 threat to your job The 1 Threat To Your JobPosted May 9, 2014, by Molly Wiltshire-Bridle Its not the next global financial crisis. Its not being outperformed by robots. Its not even your unusual preference for early morning desk tai chi. The biggest threat to your job is probably sitting right beside you. Or laughing uproariously at your bosss dad jokes. Or swiping your lunch from the fridge. Thats right. The biggest danger facing your continued employment is the very people you work with. Over the past few years, weve been conducting a poll of people taking a look at our ever-popular sample resignation letters, to find out exactly what it is thats driving employees towards the nearest exit. Over 50 per cent of respondents indicated that they were penning their goodbyes because of a co-worker. More specifically, because they cant stand their colleagues and/or boss. Thats a pretty big call. The results speak volumes for the prevailing climate in Australian workplaces. Le ss than 20 per cent of quitters were exiting with the behuf of climbing the career ladder. An even smaller proportion told us that the quest for more cash was their motivator. These figures suggest that a) were a pretty unambitious bunch, and, more importantly, b) we realllllllllllllllllly dont like one another. To put things into perspective, have a look around the table the next time youre sitting in a meeting. More than half of the people in the room with you are going to quit on account of a co-worker. If youre annoying enough, perhaps even because of you. The reality is that in the current, highly volatile job market, most of us cant afford to be flippant when it comes to our employment choices. It might seem tempting to present Helen from HR with your middle finger and interpretive danceyour way out the door now, but a few months (and several packets of 2-minute noodles) later, hindsight is inevitably going to kick in. So before you let the sycophants and pilferers push you into career exile, lets take a few moments to dig a little deeper into whats really fuelling the conflict. Wheres the love? The reality is we wont be best friends with everyone we work with, however if we have a strong enough professional relationship based on trust and respect, we give ourselves a far greater gunst der stunde of achieving harmony in the workplace, which leads to improved performance. Leading Teams facilitator Jim Plunkett knows a thing or two about the potential impacts of dissonance in the workplace. The employment relations gurus at Leading Teams have formed the backbone of their business on helping everyone from sporting teams to corporate employees to foster open, honest and constructive dialogue. Without effective communication, says Plunkett, the office becomes a ticking time bomb. Often the reason that conflict occurs in a workplace is because staff dont have strong, open, professional relationships, and this makes them much more reluctant to chall enge poor behaviours. So what can we do about it? Dont just stand there When poor behaviours arent challenged, this is acknowledgement that these behaviours are an accepted part of that workplaces culture, and can also lead to other employees adopting these behaviours, says Plunkett. Weve all seen it before. One person leaves their dirty dishes in the sink, and before you know it, youve got a festering pile-up on your hands. Its an infectious pattern that can be witnessed across just about every aspect of the workplace. So dont just stand there A troublesome co-worker or two shouldnt have you calling it curtains. Heres what you can do Step 1 Confront your co-worker But not before making an introspective assessment of your role in the conflict often, the greatest lever can be your own behaviour. Failing that, be honest, but keep it professional. You may even find that your co-worker isnt aware of how their actions are impacting those around them, and is more than willing to work towards an agreeable solution. Step 2 Speak to your supervisor Be upfront and direct, but also reasonable. Its a good idea to come prepared with a list of specific examples of where you feel your colleagues work wasnt up to scratch, as well as the ways that youve already tried to remedy the situation on your own. Step 3 Weigh up your options If steps one and two havent done the trick, then it may be time to issue yourself an ultimatum should I stay or should I go?If you decide that, despite your best efforts, the relationship really is untenable, just be sure to have a contingency plan in place before you declare a conscious uncoupling. Whos managing the managers? And finally, lets not forget the pivotal role played by management, in any case of co-worker contention. Poor management breeds poor workplace culture, and the end result is often a whole lot of unhappy staff. When you create an empowered environment you often see a rapid change in attitude from this is just a job to this is what Im responsible for, says Plunkett. Mangers take heed. Simply opening up your office channels of communication could make a world of difference to productivity. The stronger the relationship, particularly under pressure in challenging situations, the better teams can work through issues and come out the other side better, stronger, and more unified. If youre an employee suffering under a stifling regime of mismanagement and acrimony, then I can only refer you back to Step 3. Youll find a handy assortment of resignation letter templates righthere. So, what exactly should we take from all of this? If youve got a beef with a couple of co-workers, consider it par for the course. If 99 per cent of the office is grating you the wrong way, then youve probably got a leadership issue on your hands. But if all youre seeing is sunshine and rainbows. well, theres a good chance that youre the problem. Theres only one thing for it get diagnosed. With the right treatment, you r career prognosis might not be so dire after all. Has a co-worker clash ever had you penning your resignation? Did you manage to overcome the conflict? Meet The Woman Whos Tackling The Energy Industrys PR Pipeline Problem

Meet The Woman Whos Tackling The Energy Industrys PR Pipeline ProblemMeet The Woman Whos Tackling The Energy Industrys PR Pipeline Problem Katie Mehnert welches an unlikely energy executive a communications major who found herself not only in the industry, but quickly rising through the ranks at firms like Shell and BP.But Mehnert was troubled by the lack of diversity in the sectors workforce . She worried the industry would stay homogenous and misunderstood due to its insular nature and unwillingness to curt the press. So she left the corporate world to create Pink Petro , a learning community and social platform aimed at pulling more women and minorities into the energy sector. Here, she explains why an engineering degree isnt a prerequisite to an energy job, how applicants can make their resumes shine, and why an offhand comment on a plane inspired her to launch Pink Petro. You worked at some of the largest energy companies, including Shell and BP. What spurred y ou to leave and start Pink Petro?I consider myself a tweener - Im no longer officially inside the industry, but Im not an outsider either. I wanted Pink Petro to be the rational middle.I studied journalism in school, but I landed in oil & gas in part because my dad had been an engineer. And I found the energy companies are pretty standoffish to media. A lot of what they do is difficult, serious work handling hydrocarbons and electric current and there are men and women risking their lives every day to make sure we can get hot coffee and power our iPads. Energy underpins every aspect of modern life. But unfortunately, thats a great story that gets no press at all. You generally only hear about energy in the press if something goes wrong. The industry is terrible at telling its story because its been deathly afraid of the outside world. So it gets vilified. Meanwhile, you dont hear about the women and minorities who are changing the old storyline, so it doesnt inspire others to come join.I really wanted to be in the thick of telling that story. It began after Hurricane Katrina, when I was at Shell . I saw how the company sprang into action to get people fuel, how they flew people to the Gulf to figure out how to handle this disaster and get energy to people when the platforms were turned over. I was thinking, God, life has come to a screeching halt here because of the lack of energy. But nobody sees what we do unless we screw up. It was this massive a-ha moment. The big push for Pink Petro came a few years later, when I was on a flight in 2013. The man next to me and I got to talking, and he ended up saying, Whats a nice, pretty lady like you doing in a dark, dangerous geschftsleben like energy? I thought, Dammit, Im doing something about this.My husband thought I was nuts. I was on the path to take a big, big job in the sector. And I was leaving it to start a website? But I said, the time has come. The industry needs to get rid of its camera shyness. Otherwi se, everyone else is telling the story, based on incorrect assumptions. If were going to attract new kinds of talent, we need to tell our own story. What is the key to getting that new talent namely women and minorities into the energy sector, and how is Pink Petro working toward that goal?Ive been talking to executive women in the sector who are retiring, asking Is it getting better? Theyre saying no, sadly. Were seeing some women rise to C-suite positions Susan Ellerbusch new CEO of Air Liquide USA , Vicki Hollub CEO of Occidental Petroleum , Jessica Uhl CFO of Shell but the pipeline for the next generation is pretty dry.Theres a perfect storm a generational, gender, and reputation gap. To bring people from different backgrounds into the industry, the biggest thing is showing them its possible. On the C-suite side, it takes measureable performance to make it happen. Its taken a couple of major incidents in our business to realize safety is a license to operate. The CEOs who get it understand diversity is a license to operate too.So in order to engage CEOs, at Pink Petro weve focused on how inclusion offers great ROI. You need to clearly show the business case, and measure the results, to create change. A lot of people get nervous about quotas and the like. But if you dont measure, it doesnt happen. Safety is measured religiously as part of a companys sustainability report. Inclusion should be measured the same for example, inclusive companies have a 22% lower turnover rate, and if you have an engaged workforce theyre likely feeling empowered and extra-responsible for keeping everyone safe. It all ties together.I always correct people when they call us a womens networking group. Thats so transactional. Pink Petro is a global business community - all about the business case tied to diversity. Weve had companies come to us and want to throw money at us, but were not looking to have people just slap our name on something. Were asking, Where are you in y our journey, and how can we get you to the next level? On the side of individuals, we provide professional development training, hold an annual conference and other events, perform resume reviews, enable conversations between people in the industry, post job listings at our Experience Energy site, and do anything we can to support our people. And we include men. Theres no room for the boys or girls clubs when youre tackling a problem like this. In fact, 40% of the besucherzahlen to our site is men. Not all of them may be active in speaking up yet, but theyre consuming the information and I think that means theyre taking pause. We cant do it unless were all working toward these goals. How can someone break into oil and gas? What kinds of skills do you think are vital for success, and how can applicants make their resumes shine?Whether you do it through Pink Petro or otherwise, get to know someone who has worked inside oil and gas. Accessibility is key its an insular industry that has bred from its own, and that talent strategy is not going to work in the future. Weve got to show the role models and bring new blood in. Even in the past five years, I think people have become more willing to hear from and help new applicants. When it comes to training, I wasnt a technical person myself. But a woman at Shell recommended me for a safety job and explained she needed someone who could get into hearts and minds. So I had to learn a lot about processes. I asked a million questions of people on the rig. What does this piece of equipment do? An engineer could take 20 minutes and explain if this piece breaks it costs a million dollars and well have to take it out of distribution and it will affect supplyit was a lot. But I kept asking until I really got it. So dont count yourself out if you werent an engineering major. The number one thing I look for, period - male or female, industry agnostic - is someone who is curious and hungry to learn. I went to school and got X degre e doesnt cut it anymore. I want to see on your resume that youre always striving to take more on, youre able to adapt in a volatile environment, youre flexible and nimble. It can be hard to articulate that on a resume, so Pink Petro offers a free resume review on our careers site. Our approach is, before you put your name in the hat lets put your best foot forward. Its helping an individual, but it helps us all. This industry has been in a cave, and its an industry that affects everyones lives. Its time to open it up.

13 Ways to Get Promoted at Work - The Muse

13 Ways to Get Promoted at Work - The Muse13 Ways to Get Promoted at WorkIf youve been at the same job for some time, its all too easy to just assume that a promotion will come along every year, like a bonus for time served. But you have to do more than log hurs to make it to the next level. More responsibility means actively showing (and sometimes telling) your boss that youre ready to take on a new role. To show you just how its done, 13 entrepreneurs from Young Entrepreneur Council weighed in with tips on getting promoted, based on their own employees theyve seen rise through the ranks. 1. Make Your Boss ObsoleteIts ironic, but the best way to get promoted is to make your boss job easier. And the best way to do that is to make his or her job obsolete. Youre not really putting your manager out of a job- youre allowing him or her to trust your work. In turn, he or she can focus on new areas that the higher-ups have needed to address for some time. Strong work goes up the chain, impr oves the company, and gets you noticed.- Ankur Gopal, Interapt2. Summarize Work VisuallyWhen talking about your work, give us something to look at. When you answer the question, Why are people buying? show a chart of the top responses as well as how many people gave each response. It makes everyone a believer when we can see a quick visual snapshot that backs up what youre saying.- Adam Grant,Campus Commandos3. Own Projects From Start to FinishOrganizations place a premium on individuals who follow through on tasks. If you can prove that you can consistently own projects from start to finish, you will not only get promoted, but youll also make yourself indispensable.- Kyle Wong,Pixlee4. Keep a Positive AttitudeThe people who typically get promoted keep their cool under stress. They also act as a role model to everyone around them. They meet deadlines and ask relevant, intelligent questions that help clients be happier with our services. When an issue arises, they want to solve it an d work to avoid future problems by learning from their mistakes.- Nicole Munoz,Start Ranking Now5. Raise Other Team Members PerformanceI look for people who are completing their assignments and asking what that next task is going to be. They help their colleagues instead of stepping on them in their climb up the ladder. I love to promote people on my team who raise the performance of everybody around them.- Joshua Lee,StandOut Authority6. Make Your Boss Aware You Want the PromotionIt seems quite simple, but expressing your desire for a particular promotion is very helpful. Sometimes management may not know you want it, or has not thought of you as a candidate, especially if its outside of your current department. Often management will tell you what you need to do to get the position if they know you want it. Be humble, inquisitive, passionate, and hungry.- Joshua Waldron,Silencerco, LLC7. Show Pride in Your WorkCompetence, diligence, intelligence, loyalty- these all matter, but what matters most is the inherent will to do the best work possible. The work is what matters, and employees who take it personally, who own their work as a reflection of their values and take pride in doing good work, are the employees I trust with positions of responsibility.- Vik Patel,Future Hosting8. Avoid Office Politics and GossipThe qualities we considered most were those that demonstrate integrity and trustworthiness- which we measured by looking at who chose not to participate in office politics and gossip. While its important to understand the balance of office politics, individuals who are able to rise above the temptations stand out most as those I think would be the fairest to others in management roles.- Souny West,CHiC Capital9. Display CommitmentWhen people are really committed, you can tell by the quality of their work, the effort they put in, and the relationships they develop. When employees show commitment, we notice and try to reward them with deserved promotions. - Alfredo Atanacio,Uassist.ME10. Demonstrate That You Can Solve Client ProblemsTo get promoted, you have to show that you can take the manahme and help our clients solve their problems. Since I run a marketing company, I am looking for people who can implement creative and effective campaigns that make both us and our clients shine. This also means being able to work independently, without having to be told what to do every step of the way.- Shawn Porat,Fortune Cookie Advertising11. Be ExceptionalI want to promote from within, but its important that clients and co-workers see the justification. I need team members to make a significant impact on their clients- who really wow them. If they dont have a client-facing position, they should be the go-to person for their colleagues.- Eddie Lou,Shiftgig12. Make MoneyIf someone is making money, theyll be promoted. Making money is the ultimate internal currency. All other internal performance metrics can be translated into the money-making m etric. And yes, saving money is making money, too. Anyone who understands enough of the business ROI levers to structure and ask for more resources or a different title will probably get it and keep moving up each time the argument is made.- pferd Resnick,Roaming Hunger13. Attract and Manage Great TalentAt a fast-growing company, hiring quality people quickly is one of the most important goals. Thats why I place great value on people who can bring in additional talent through their existing networks, convince that talent to join our company, and cultivate those individuals into productive team members. Showing that you can build and manage a profitable team is a clear path to promotion.Sathvik Tantry,FormSwiftPhoto of raised hand courtesy of Shutterstock.
